Researchers from PlaceboEffect.com are raising funds through Indiegogo to create an app that administers a virtual placebo. No pills, no doctors — just pictures.

Here’s how it works: You begin the experience by choosing which lifestyle aspect you’d like to change — say, quitting smoking or decreasing stress — before scheduling an alarm-like reminder to “take it” each day. Then, you can personalize it further by choosing exactly what you’ll be taking (it doesn’t need to be a picture of a pill).

The whole idea is to create a comfortable “happy place” to achieve the proper effect. With the right mindset, the group says, the act of routinely pressing buttons and watching your smartphone‘s screen will be equivalent to physically swallowing a sugar pill.

Watch the video above to learn more. At time of writing, the group had raised almost $10,000 of its $50,000 goal, with 18 days remaining to donate.

Would you give this a shot? Tell us what you think about it below. Stay up-to-date with the project here.

One of the hardest things about running is finding a good run — when you’re bogged down in setting up logistics for how long, how fast and how much you’re hitting the streets, it’s difficult to actually enjoy it and keep it going. Runkeeper, easily one of the most popular fitness tools online today, can help you with all of it by using your smartphone’s GPS to gather helpful information about your daily run.

You can also take advantage of Runkeeper’s dashboard to see how your runs improve over time, run with a specified program (like their popular 5k trainer), and allow friends to send you encouraging messages while you run.

A great exercise routine can only do so much of the work — it’s also about what you put in your body that counts. MyFitnessPal is a straightforward, simple calorie counter that helps track food intake daily, setting caloric goals and factoring in exercise to give an accurate readout of how your diet shapes up every day.

Setting up a system is relatively easy, and it rewards you for staying on track by offering badges and challenges to loyal users. The app has a robust and fairly accurate pre-established database of foods — even broken down to brands and menu items at popular restaurants. Comprehensive and simple, MyFitnessPal is a great way to get an idea of what your diet looks like and how you can change it over time.

Maybe great music isn’t enough for you to push yourself and keep at the exercise habit. Would zombies change your mind?

Zombies, Run! is an interactive running app that casts the user as Runner 5, an important equipment handler and gatherer for the upstart post-apocalyptic survivor town, Abel Township. As you run, zombies are hot on your tail, and the app will cut into your music to tell you that they’re gaining fast. You also “collect equipment” along the way to help service Abel Township and make it stronger against the oncoming hordes. There are 23 missions to play through, as well as a 20k mission challenge, so there’s plenty zombie goodness to keep you running for a while.

If your idea of fitness is less treadmill and more Trikonasana, then you also know that a yoga habit (especially in a big city) can be a pricey and rigid one. The best benefits come to those who practice yoga faithfully every day, but not many people have the time or money to make that a reality.

Pocket Yoga is a very simple way to workaround the constraints of practicing yoga by bringing full yoga workouts to your smartphone. Simply roll out your mat and follow along with the poses on your phone.
The whole point of exercise is to keep an active heart rate, but actually checking a pulse during a workout can be a pain. Exercise watches with built-in heart monitors can be expensive, and more traditional chest monitors can feel bulky and awkward in a fitness setting.

Enter Instant Heart Rate, an app that takes accurate pulse measurements by utilizing a smartphone’s camera to measure color changes in the tip of a pointer finger. Just click the “Measure” icon, cover your camera lens with your finger, and the app will track the rate of your heartbeat as well as produce a PPG readout of every single beat. The whole process takes less than 30 seconds total, and it keeps a detailed log of every heart rate test so you can see differences over time.

The human race has had a profound effect on the planet. Unfortunately, it hasn’t always been positive. One of the overlooked issues we’ve caused is overfishing. By fishing too much, we have diminished the population of fish in a way that, according to many scientists, can even threaten oceanic ecosystems.

To highlight this issue, which is often poorly understood by the general public, Sam Slover, a 28-year-old student at the New York University Interactive Telecommunications Program has designed an interactive web aquarium that lets users see how the fish population has changed from 1910 until 2010.

“My goal was to take important data that at first glance can be a bit dry and turn it into something fun and visually appealing,” Slover told Mashable. “Overfishing is a huge problem, and my hope is that this project can be a playful way for people to become more informed.”

The project is called The Nature of Overfishing, and it was made for a programming course that Slover took at NYU. On the interactive website (check it out here), made with ProcessingJS and custom Javascript, a visitor can scroll through the past 100 years of fishing history. As years go by, the animated representations of big predatory fish and small prey fish either vanish or multiply.

Slover explains that overfishing has decimated mainly predatory fish, the ones humans eat. Their decrease has directly led to an increase in the population of prey fish. In 2010, there were 78% less predator fish than in 1910, whereas the population of small fish has increased 133%. The study and the website show the decline was initially slow (up to 1970 it was just 0.2% a year), but it picked up from 1970 to 1990 with a 4% annual decline. After that, the decline has slowed down to 2.9%.

The data on which the visualization is based comes from a study (PDF) by Villy Christensen and the University of British Columbia Fisheries Centre.

“Overfishing has absolutely had a ‘when cats are away, the mice will play’ effect on our oceans,” said Christensen, who presented the research findings at the American Association for the Advancement of Science annual conference in Washington. “By removing the large, predatory species from the ocean, small forage fish have been left to thrive.”

Take a look for yourself at Slover’s digital aquarium. His website will also be featured Monday at the NYU Interactive Telecommunications Program Spring Show.

This isn’t exactly your textbook bit of damage control PR.

UFC fighter Nate Diaz (above) was suspended by the mixed martial arts body on Thursday night for earlier in the week using a gay slur against another fighter. That’s typically where a manager or someone else would step in and get the athlete to apologize and talk about the perils of using inappropriate, insensitive language, right?

Wrong.

Instead, Diaz’s manager Mike Kogan directed offended parties to the slang terminology website Urban Dictionary to justify the slur.

Diaz drew his suspension for a since-deleted tweet in which he criticized another fighter for taking bonus money that would have gone to fighter Pat Healy until Healy was ruled ineligible for the purse because of a positive marijuana test.

“I feel bad for pat Healy that they took a innocent mans money and I think the guy who took the money is the biggest F** in the world,” Diaz wrote, according to screenshots of the post.

Kogan then took to Twitter himself to tell people to “please read from Urban Dictionary” in this gem of a defense:

Later on Thursday afternoon, the website MMAjunkie.com gave Kogan yet another chance do a little PR and walk things back. Here’s part of what he had to say:

“Guess what? The word f****t, at least in Northern California, and where Nate is from, means b****. It means you’re a little punk. It has nothing to do with homosexuals at all. So when Nate made the comment that he made, he didn’t make it in reference to homosexuals or calling Caraway a homosexual. He just said it was a b**** move.

Sports stars mess up on Twitter all the time. That’s unfortunate and reprehensible. But, with acknowledgment and apology, it’s often forgivable. In the age Jason Collins and rising awareness of homophobia in sports, however, a defense like Kogan’s is somewhat mind-boggling.

What do you think? Let us know in the comments.

Yahoo looks to be very seriously eyeing a Tumblr acquisition, according to a report from AllThingsD.

The tech blog is reporting that the Yahoo board plans to meet Sunday to mull a $1.1 billion all-cash bid for Tumblr. ATD cautions that the deal could fall apart, but was on track as of Friday evening. If the board votes in favor of the deal, it could be announced Monday, a day in which Yahoo has already scheduled a major press conference.

Reps from Yahoo and Tumblr could not be reached for comment on the report.

The report goes on to say that Yahoo CEO Marissa Mayer has been intensely interested in Tumblr for the past six weeks and feels that the microblogging platform’s young-skewing audience and mobile savvy are just what Yahoo needs to reinvent itself. Sources tell ATD that Tumblr CEO would continue to operate it as an autonomous, separate entity. Karp would be locked into a four-year deal that would reward him based on the business’s performance.

Nintendo will collect revenue from fan-made YouTube videos that feature content from its games, according to a statement by the company.

That means any time someone uploads a walkthrough or “let’s play” video — a popular format where players demo the first 10 to 30 minutes of a game — Nintendo will be able to collect royalties on it.

“For most fan videos this will not result in any changes, however, for those videos featuring Nintendo-owned content, such as images or audio of a certain length, adverts will now appear at the beginning, next to or at the end of the clips,” said a Nintendo statement to GameFront. “We continually want our fans to enjoy sharing Nintendo content on YouTube, and that is why, unlike other entertainment companies, we have chosen not to block people using our intellectual property.”

Nintendo will accomplish this by using YouTube’s Content Match ID system, which allows publishers, television networks or record labels to identify if content being used in a video is something from their products. Those entities can then monetize those videos.

Minecraft creator Markus Persson, better known as Notch, commented on Twitter Thursday that he was offered the same options by YouTube, meaning it’s something more publishers could consider.

We had a meeting with YouTube and got told we could get a cut of all Minecraft video ad revenue. It was tempting.

— Markus Persson (@notch) May 16, 2013

Thanks for the nice comments, but remember we almost did it. We would’ve backtracked after the feedback, but we almost did it. Scary! :O

YouTube creator Zack Scott has gained a huge following for his Let’s Play videos, with more than 81 million views on his gaming-focused YouTube channel. He posted a lengthy response on his Facebook page to Nintendo’s decision. Scott calls himself a serious Nintendo fan, and his YouTube videos of Nintendo games do well. His video for the recently released 3DS title Luigi’s Mansion: Dark Moon has nearly 400,000 views.

“I think filing claims against LPers is backwards. Video games aren’t like movies or TV. Each play-through is a unique audiovisual experience. When I see a film that someone else is also watching, I don’t need to see it again. When I see a game that someone else is playing, I want to play that game for myself! Sure, there may be some people who watch games rather than play them, but are those people even gamers?”

Scott goes on to say that gamers watch his videos, and others like him, to get insight on how to beat a game or for his specific commentary. Scott said he will ultimately choose no longer to feature Nintendo games on his channel for fear of reprisal in the future, and to protest for the vibrant “Let’s Play” community.

Think your network is fast? Getting a gigagbyte-sized movie over your local wireless network to your hard drive in a few seconds is old hat. Now there’s a network that can push a 2-hour, high-definition movie to a computer a mile away in less time than it takes to read a single word.

At the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology in Germany, a new record has been set: 40GB per second over a distance of about .6 of a mile. That’s like sending 10 high-def feature films.

What makes this possible is a combination of better hardware and the use of higher radio frequencies, in this case, 240 gigahertz. That hardware is a set of chips developed at Karlsruhe that can process signals at higher frequencies. Higher frequencies mean smaller components, since a shorter wavelength can be picked up by a smaller antenna (which is why FM and AM radios need relatively large antennas, while Wi-Fi receivers can use small ones). These chips were only a few millimeters on a side.

The high frequencies are necessary for moving lots of data — the number of bits that can travel over the airwaves is inversely proportional to the wavelength. The shorter the wavelength, the more data that can go in a given time.

A Wi-Fi network operates at 2.4 or 5 GHz, and tens of megabytes per second is not uncommon. Smartphones on the latest networks work at frequencies somewhat below that, and it’s no accident that they struggle to hit 10MB per second.

At some high frequencies moisture in the air can cause the signal to fade, but 240 GHz seems to be in a sweet spot where there’s little interference from moisture. Since transmissions can go much further than a Wi-Fi router can manage, there’s a possibility this type of transmitter would work well for rural areas where laying down fiber-optic cable — the gold standard of transmission speed — is too expensive to justify.

MetroPCS dropped its lawsuit challenging the Federal Communications Commission’s net neutrality rules Friday, leaving Verizon the FCC’s sole legal opponent in the case.

T-Mobile purchased MetroPCS last month; T-Mobile is not involved with the net neutrality lawsuit.

The FCC’s rules bar landline-based broadband providers from discriminating between different kinds of Internet traffic. For example: If you’re a Time Warner Cable subscriber, TWC can’t slow your connection speeds if you’re trying to access a website run by NBC Universal, now owned by TWC rival Comcast.

Net Neutrality has been one of the most controversial legacies left by outgoing FCC Chairman Julius Genachowski. Supporters of the policy argue it’s pro-consumer and pro-competition, while detractors say it’s undue government interference with the Internet.

Genachowski, who’s stepping down from the chairmanship Friday, welcomed MetroPCS’s decision to drop from the case.

“Since 2010, our strong and balanced rules have been protecting entrepreneurs and consumers, and have increased certainty and predictability for investors in Internet services as well as networks,” said Genachowski in a statement. “The ongoing litigation –- now pursued by a single company –- only serves to reduce that certainty and predictability.”

Public Knowledge, an open Internet advocacy group, also applauded the move.

“We’re happy that T-Mobile has dropped MetroPCS’s lawsuit challenging the Open Internet rules,” said Public Knowledge CEO and President Gigi B. Sohn. “The rules are working. While they’re not perfect, they reassure Internet companies that they will be able to reach users, they give ISPs a framework under which they can manage their networks, and they provide a mechanism for working out disputes.”

Verizon, whose ongoing lawsuit argues the FCC didn’t have the authority to issue its Net Neutrality rules, has not yet responded to Mashable’s request for comment.

Following rumors that Yahoo is in talks to buy blogging platform Tumblr for an estimated $1 billion, the company has sent members of the press invitations to a mysterious event it is holding next week.

The event, which will be held at 5:00 p.m. ET in New York City on Monday, includes the tagline on the invitation: “Join us as we share something special.”

The news comes as reports indicated this week Yahoo is closing in on a deal to buy Tumblr, which would make the transaction — if it’s $1 billion — the largest since Facebook bought Instagram in 2012.

With his New York Knicks locked in a back-and-forth NBA playoff showdown against the Indiana Pacers, struggling offensive specialist and enfant terrible of the social web J.R. Smith has a message for haters.

Here it is:

JR Smith: “I’m not worried about Instagram. I’m worried about the playoffs.”

— Tim Bontemps (@TimBontemps) May 17, 2013

That came in response to an Instagram rant the singer Rihanna reportedly posted in response to a follower’s comment on this photo. After Rihanna and Smith were photographed partying together recently in New York, the commenter blamed her for Smith’s poor post-season performance. To which Rihanna responded:

“F*** you and your wack ass team! Nobody don’t want that desert thirsty ass n****!! He f***in up because his ass be hungover from clubbing every night during the playoffs!! So your issue ain’t with rasshole me”

Well OK then, Rihanna!

Indeed, Smith’s playoff stats have been pretty rough, prompting multiple questions about his off-the-court regimen. His struggles have even spawned the excellent Twitter account @DidJRSmithMiss, which chronicles his every attempt, then posts game recaps such as this one:

Recap: yes, yes, yes, yes, no, yes, yes, yes, yes, yes, no, yes, yes, no, yes, yes, no, no, yes, no, yes, no.

Smith, for the uninitiated, is no stranger to antics on Twitter and Instagram. Here’s a brief recap from just the past four months:

Two weeks ago, he tweeted out an “Official NBA Bandwagon Transferral Form” for fans critical of his play amid rumors of excessive partying.

In March, he shared this incriminating photo of a polka dot dress shirt sported by Knicks coach Mike Woodson, along with the hashtag #Top5WorstShirtsIveSeenInMyLife.
